本文利用X射线衍射法研究了四羟基杯[4]芳烃与水、氯仿的包合物的晶体结构,它们属六方晶系, 为分子间包合物。通过这些研究发现: 在晶体中, 四羟基杯[4]芳烃是通过六重螺旋轴的作用形成一种管道型的空间来包合客体分子, 这种管道具有对客体分子选择性等特点。

Tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene clathrate with water is hexagonal, space group P63/m, with a 1.4528(2) and c 1.8269(4) nm; dc = 1.27 for Z = 6; final R = 0.0853 (Rw = 0.0679). Tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene clathrate with chloroform is hexagonal, space group P63, with a 1.4794(2) and c 1.8065(4) nm; dc = 1.58 for Z = 6, final R = 0.081 (Rw = 0.082). Atomic coordinates are given. Both are intermol. clathrates. A tubular space is formed from tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene through hexahexanol axis rotation to include the guest mol.
