Synthesis, Characterization and Properties of meso-Tetrakis(2-alkoxyphenyl)porphyrins and Their Copper(II) Complexes

A series of meso-tetrakis(2-alkoxyphenyl)porphyrin derivatives [(ROPh)4PH2] and their copper(II) complexes [(ROPh)4PCu] were synthesized, and sixteen of them were new compounds. For the first time, [(ROPh)4PH2] and [(ROPh)4PCu] were generated as crystals or solids. The 1H NMR, mass, FTIR, UV-Vis spectra and elemental analysis data were in good agreement with the assigned structures. The liquid crystalline (LC) properties of twenty compounds were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscope. It was observed that nineteen of them behaved as LC in a wide range of temperature. However, they displayed as heated monotropic liquid crystals.
