Electrochemical Deposition of Pt Particles on Indium Tin Oxide Electrode and Their Electrocatalytic Applications in Ammonia Oxidation

An indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode was used as the substrate for supporting Pt particles prepared by potentiostatic electrodeposition. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were employed to characterize the morphology, the composition and the structure of the deposited Pt particles. The electrocatalytic performance towards ammonia oxidation for the Pt/ITO electrode and its active surface area were investigated by the cyclic voltammetric (CV) and electrochemical active surface area (EASA) measurements. The results showed that sub-micron size Pt particles with good dispersion on ITO can be successfully obtained by electrodeposition method. The Pt/ITO electrode (with only 0.12 mg•cm-2 of Pt loading) has much better catalytic activity than that of the pure Pt electrode towards ammonia oxidation. This can be attributed to the small size and the good dispersion of the Pt particles which contribute to its high electrochemical active surface area.
