Synthesis, Photoluminescence and Electroluminescence Properties of a New Binuclear Eu(III) Complex

A binuclear europium(II) complex of Eu(TTA)3(tpphz)Eu(TTA)3 (where tpphz=tetrapyrido- [3,2-a:2',3'-c:3'',2''-h:2''',3'''-j]phenazine; TTA=α-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) was newly synthesized. The photoluminescent and electroluminescent properties of the complex were studied. A four-layered device of ITO/TPD, 10 nm/Eu(TTA)3(tpphz)Eu(TTA)3, 20 nm/BCP, 20 nm/AlQ, 40 nm/Mg0.9Ag0.1, 200 nm/Ag, 100 nm gave a wide emission peak centered at 633 nm, which was most probably due to the formation of the exciplex between the Eu(III) complex and TPD. The maximum luminance of 146 cd/m2 at 18 V and 135 mA/cm2, and a turn-on voltage of 10 V were achieved for the device.
