Synthesis, Characterization and Properties of Zinc Complexes of meso-Tetrakis(2-alkoxyphenyl)porphyrin

meso-Tetrakis(2-alkoxyphenyl)porphyrin [meso-T(2-ROP)PH2] obtained by condensation of 2-alkoxybenzaldehydes with pyrrole, reacted with zinc acetate to form corresponding complexes [meso- T(2-ROP)PZn], while nine of them were new compounds. For the first time, meso-T(2-ROP)PZn were generated as crystals or solids. Molecular structures of all synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, UV, 1H NMR, MS spectra and elemental analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscope were used to probe the liquid crystal properties of the serial complexes. Six of them were found to exhibit liquid crystal properties. However they displayed as heated monotropic liquid crystals.
