This communication reports the result of a study of Nelson method with the purpose of being applied to the determination of nitrates in fresh waters. According to otu findings, firstly, a trace of copper sulfate should be added to the acetic acid in order to enhence the sensitivity and reproducibility; secondly, nitrites should be removed by using of sodium azide if it is present together with nitrate in the sample.
