Two new alkaloids, named gelsenicine and gelsenidine respectively, have been isolated from Chinese gelsemium (Gelsemzum elegans Benth.) by alnminnm oxide column chromatography and preparative TLC on silica gel GF₂₅₄.Gelsenicine, C₂₁H₂₄N₂O₃.m.p.171~173℃, has been identified as,through spectroscopic analyses (UV, IR, NMR, MS) and chemical reactions.The structure of gelsenidine, C₂₁H₂₄N₂O₃, m.p.143-145℃, is being determined.From this plant, we have also isolated six known alkaloids: konmine, koumini-dine, koumicine, koumidine, geleemine and N₁-methogygelsemine.The last one was fiist isolated from Gelsemium sempervirens Ait., bnt its isolation from Gelsemium elegans Benth, has not been reported.On the basis of the high resolution mass spectral data the molecular formula of koumicine, previously reported to be C₂₀H₃₀N₂O₃, is now revised to C₂₁H₂₄N₂O₃, m.p.252-254℃(dec.).
