High quality poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) films were synthesized electrochemically by direct oxidation of 9,9-dioctylfluorene in pure boron trifluoride diethyl etherate on stainless steel sheet, with polymer conductivity of 1×10-2 S/cm. The initiate oxidation onset of 9,9-dioctylfluorene in such medium was only 1.25 V vs. SCE, which was much lower than that determined in 0.1 mol/L Bu4NBF4 acetonitrile solution (1.52 V vs. SCE). Polymer obtained from this medium showed good electrochemical behavior and can be partly dissolved in chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, dimethylsulfoxide, etc. FTIR and 1H NMR spectral investigations indicated that the polymerization of monomer occurred mainly at 2,7 positions, and fluorescent spectral studies indicated that the polymer was a blue-light emitter.
