Electrochemically Synthesized Polypyrrole Coatings and Their Effect on Electrical Properties of Neural Microelectrode

A series of conducting polypyrrole (PPy) coatings with different thickness and morphology were electrochemically synthesized on neural microelectrodes. The chemical component and morphology of PPy coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. The effect of PPy coatings on electrical properties of neural microelectrode was further studied. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of neural microelectrodes before and after PPy coating indicated that the neural microelectrode s impedance after PPy coating dropped to 1/55 of that without PPy coating. Cyclic voltammograms showed that the electric capacity of neural microelectrode with PPy coating was evidently increased with a longer reaction time or a higher current density within a range.
