Aluminum(III) Salts Promoted Transamination of Glutamic Acid for the Synthesis of α-Ketoglutaric Acid

This paper reports an efficient approach for the synthesis of α-ketoglutaric acid via Al(III) salt promoted transamination of glyoxylic acid monohydrate with glutamic acid. Under optimized conditions (80 ℃, pH=5), the transamination proceeded efficiently in an aqueous solution of glyoxylic acid and glutamic acid in the presence of a catalytic amount of KAl(SO4)2·12H2O, affording α-ketoglutaric acid in up to 87% yield. This method features inexpensive chemical feedstocks, easy operation and high productivity, thus providing an efficient and practical approach to α-ketoglutaric acid.
