About twenty years ago, one of the present authors^[1] (Hsing) described an investigation of the alkaloids of the Chinese drug, Han-fang-chi from which an alkaloid was obtained and proved to be identical with tetrandrine obtained from Stephania tetrandra S.Moore by Kondo^[2].Besides, a second phenolic base was obtained and named as fangchinoline which contains 1C and 2H atoms less than tetrandrine.It was proved to be a demethyltetrandrine.
