Ohle and his coworkers suggested that a 3,6-anhydrohexoside can be formed from 2,3-anhydrohexoside in alkaline media if the 2,3-anhydro ring is disposed in Haworth's perspective formula such that it is in the opposite side to the C5-CH2OH side chain. It is obvious that the transformation involves an intramolecular SN2 mechanism, but experimental evidence is quite limited.
