Although various methods for colorimetric and spectro-photometric determinations of vanadium have been recommended, most of the available procedures involve either extraction of the colored complex or the separation of interfering metal ions, especially in the analysis of most steel samples, while other methods without intricate treatments show less sensitivity. A new method for photometric determination of vanadium is here sugested. The dark blue chelate produced by interaction between vanadium (Ⅴ) and sulphosalicylic acid in concentrated sulphuric acid(~30 N) medium or concentrated sulphuric and phosphoric acids medium is used as basis for determining vanadium. Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration range of 1 to 20 μg vanadium per ml. The results were found to be affected by the concentration of acidic medium, the amount of chelating agent, time of colour development, temperature and heat effect during colour development: however these variables can be controlled to give satisfactory results. The presence of large amount of iron (Ⅲ) and other metal ions does not interfere with the determination.
