Five lignan oompounds, sohisantherin A (Ⅰa),B (Ⅱa),C (Ⅲa),D (Ⅳa) and E (Ⅴa) have been isolated from the fruits of Hua-Zhong-Wu-Wei-Zi (Schisandra sphenanthera Rehd et Wils) (Magnotiaceae). In preliminary clinical trials, schisantherin A, B, C and D showed significant effect in lowering the serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) level of the patients suffering from chronio virus hepatitis.
