Attempted C-aoetylation of 1, 3-dimethoxyaoetone (1a) with ethyl acetate using sodium ethoxide or metallic sodium as condensing agents leads to self-condensation of 1a to give rise to 1, 3, 5, 5'-tetramethoxymesityl oxide (6).
