Vapor-phase fluorination of BuPh with CoF3 at 300?gave perfluorobutylcyclohexane, -a-methylindene, and -trans- and -cis-decalin as the main products. Other products included F(CF2)nF (n = 6,7), perfluoroethylcyclohexane, -propylcyclohexane, and -methylpropylcyclohexane. These results showed that cyclization is a main side reaction in vapor-phase fluorinations with CoF3. This method is a convenient route to perfluoro-a-methylindene.
