Synthesis and reaction of dimethyl-3,3-dichloro-2-pro penylsulfonium chloride

Abstract

The sulfonium salt Me2S+CH2CH:CCl2Cl- (I) was synthesized from Me2S and 1,1,3-trichloro-1-propene. Without isolation, the sulfoium ylide Cl2C:CHCHSMe2 (II) generated from treating I with NaOEt can react with carbonyl compounds directly to give the corresponding epoxides. II also reacted with a, b-unsatd. ketones to give the corresponding cyclopropanes.
