Oxidative Desulfurization of Thiophene over Modified Alumina Loading Oxide

Oxidative desulfurization of thiophene in n-heptane solution was conducted with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and formic acid over a catalyst of acid modified alumina loading copper oxide. The effects of modifying acidity, the oxidizing system, reaction temperature as well as the addition of olefin and aromatics were investigated in details. The reaction mechanism of the oxidative desulfurization of thiophene was preliminarily researched. The results showed that acid modified alumina loading copper oxide was a very active catalyst for the oxidation of thiophene. In H2O2/HCOOH system, the conversion of thiophene was higher than those of other oxidizing systems. The sulfur removal rate of thiophene was enhanced with increasing temperature and reduced with the addition of olefin and aromatics.
