Organic/inorganic nanocomposite particles find wide applications. Miniemulsion polymerization is an effective method to produce this kind of composite material, in which fission/fusion process is a new way. As an important aspect, morphology control is crucial in organic/inorganic nanocomposite particles applications. Based on thermodynamics, basic theory, i.e. minimum interface free energy, was used to calculate equilibrium morphology of organic/inorganic nanocomposite particles by fission/fusion miniemulsion process. Thermodynamic equations of several kinds of equilibrium morphology of nanocomposite particles, such as core-shell, hemisphere, sandwich and separate, were derived. By comparing with interface free energy of different morphologies under specific condition, the most stable one could be identified.
Key words: thermodynamics, nanocomposite particle, prediction of morphology, miniemulsion
