A series of the chitosan-graft-polyacrylamide samples with various components have been prepared according to a reported method. To measure the grafting ratio of the graft copolymers accurately, a new method of specific refractive index increment measurement has been tried based on the observed solution properties of graft copolymers usually equal to the summation, which are contributed from different components of the copolymers. The calculated results have been compared with those by the elemental analysis method. In addition, the proposed method was further confirmed by measuring the weight percents of the components of chitosan and polyacrylamide (PAM) mixtures, with well known mixed ratios, by specific refractive index increment measurement. However, the further work is being still carried out, and some other graft copolymer systems will be tried in the near future.
