Fifteen alkaloids have been isolated from Melodinus fusiformis (Apocynaceae), a plant used in Chinese folk medicine for the treatment of rheumatic heart disease, and invigorating the circulation of blood. Three of them have been established as new alkaloids: 11,19(R)-dihydroxytabersonine (I), 11-hydroxy-14,15a-epoxy tabersonine (II) and scandine Nb-oxide (III). The 12 known alkaloids were scandine, meloscandonine, 10-hydroxyscandine, kopsinine, 15a-hydroxy kopsinine, venalstonine, tabersonine, 11-methoxytabersonine, 11-hydroxytabersonine, tubotaiwine, vindolinine, and deacetylpicraline. Alkaloids I and II show significant spermatocidal and antitumor activity, resp.
