Following the recent preparation of [(py)N)2Mo8O26]4- from MoO3.2H2O and pyridine by E. M. McCarron III et al. (1984), (pyH)4[(py)2W12O38].6H2O, a colorless crystalline compound, was prepared by the reaction of white powdery tungstic acid with an aqueous solution of pyridine. A yellow byproduct was also isolated from the reaction mixture The composition of that compound was analyzed as (py)0.85WO3, close to (py).WO3, an interlayer compound prepared by J. W. Johnson (1981) using yellow tungstic oxide hydrate. Suspension of white powdery tungstic acid in anhydrous pyridine yields on standing for 2 wk white (pyH)HW4O13.3H2O. IR and DTA studies revealed the connection between that pyridine polytungstate and white powdery tungstic acid (microcryst.), whose composition may thereby be assigned as H2W4O13.nH2O.
