The chemical constituent of starfish: The steroidal sapogenin of starfish asterias rollentoni bell

Abstract

Two steroidal sapogenins were isolated from a hot EtOH extract of fresh starfish (A. rollentoni) by organic solvent extration and silica gel column and thin-layer chromatog. Observations from physicochem. constant detns., NMR, IR, and mass spectroscopy, and acetylation identified the 2 steroidal sapogenins as 20(R)-5a-pregn-9(11)-en-3b,6a,20-triol (I) and 5a-pregn-9(11)-en-3b,6a-diol-20-one (II).
