Synthesis of (Z)-2-Methyl-2-Butenedioic Acid-1-Methyl Ester and Determination of Apparent Reactivity Ratio of Copolymerization with Acrylonitrile

A new methacrylate monomer, (Z)-2-methyl-2-butenedioic acid-1-methyl ester (MBAME), was synthesized using citraconic anhydride as starting material. This monomer can copolymerize with acrylonitrile in N,N-dimethylformamide at 70 ℃ using 2,2’-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The apparent reactivity ratio of AN/MBAME copolymerization system calculated by Fineman-Ross method was 7.985 for AN and 0.599 for MBAME, respectively. This result may benefit the production of PAN-based carbon fiber.
