In a previous report we have shown that sodium carboxymethylamylose(Na-CMA, 1) can form relatively stable inclusion complexes with substrates possessing hydrocarbon chains of suitable length. The inclusion process is accompanied by conformational changes of the polymer chain of 1 from coils to interrupted helices. In this communication we report our first attempt to utilize this microenvironment provided by the helical conformations of 1 as a hydrolytic enzyme model; catalytic effects on the hydrolysis of various esters (2 to 5) are presented.
