A method for indirect photometric analysis of sulphate with barium chromate-arsenous oxide-EDTA has been described. The optimum concentration range lies within 0.5-12 mg SO42- per 100 ml of solution. It is found that Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl- and NO3- do interfere, while PO43- does.Silicate, Fe3+ and Al3+ ions interfere only slightly when they are present in large amounts. This method is simple and rapid, and the colour formed is very stable. It has been applied successively to the determination of sulphate in water and soil analysis, the precision of which is found to lie within 1-3%.
