An unknown compound, m.p. 281-283°, with the molecular formula of C₁₂H₁₁NO₄, has been isolated from a purchased sample of the Chinese drug "Mu-Tong", which has long been used as a diuretic. This compound is neither an alkaloid nor a glycoside. It behaves like a phenolic,or an enolic compound containing nitrogen.
