Extractive Desulfurization of Fuel Oil with Metal-Based Hyamine Ionic Liquids

Five metal-based hyamine ionic liquids (CPL-TBAB)/MCln (M=Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, Fe) were synthesized and investigated in extractive desulfurization of model oil. The result indicated that (CPL-TBAB)/CuCl2·2H2O was superior to other ionic liquids for the extraction desulfurization. The removal ratio of dibenzothiophene (DBT) can be up to 97.10% under the optimal reaction conditions having the suitable molar ratio of CPL-TBAB to CuCl2·2H2O being 1:0.8 and VIL/VOIL being 1:1 at room temperature and atmosphere. The extraction ability of ionic liquid decreases only slightly after 6 cycles of reuse. (CPL-TBAB)/0.8CuCl2·2H2O showed an excellent extraction ability for different sulfur compounds model oil and real diesel. The single extractive desulfurization removal ratio of real diesel was 75.59%. These results demonstrate that this metal-based ionic liquid is a promising extractive desulfurization agent.
