The title compound (I; R = OH) was treated with SOCl2-pyridine to give 50% dichloropropane I (R = Cl) (II) and 25% oxetane III. Reaction of II with H2NCSNH2 followed by hydrolysis with aqueous NaOH gave 55% allyl mercaptan IV (R1 = SH) and 25% allyl alcohol IV (R1 = OH). Treatment of II with NaCN-DMSO gave 40 and 23% of elimination products IV (R1 = CN, Cl), resp.
