Eight new multidentate ligands I (n = 0, 1, 2; R = H, Me, Et, 2-HO2CC6H4, 8-quinolyl) have been synthesized by refluxing squaric acid with amines 2-H2NC6H4OCH2(CH2OCH2)nCH2OR which were obtained from chlorides or alcs. through nitro compounds 2-KOC6H4NO2 or 2-ClC6H4NO2. I (n = 2, R = H) turned out to be an active constituent for NH3-selective electrodes in addition to its coordinations to UO22+ and ZrO2+. This phenomenon originates from the interaction between the small and highly pos. charged squaric ring and NH3 bearing a pair of unshared electrons.
