De-tert-butylation reaction of some substituted phenols

tert-Butylphenols I (R1 = Me3C, R2 = Me, CH2CH2CO2Me, Me3C; R1 = H, R2 = Me3C) undergo de-tert-butylation in the presence of AlCl3 and toluene. I (R1 = Me3C, R2 = H) also afforded the p-isomer I (R1 = H, R2 = Me3C) under the same conditions; this is interpreted as Friedel-Crafts tert-butylation following the de-tert-butylation.
