γ-Aryl-γ-hydroxy-propylamines have been synthesized as follows:In the presence of polyphosphoric acid,β-phthalimidopropanoic acid (Ⅰ) was condensed with anisol or pyrocatechol dimethylether to give the corresponding aryl (β-phthalimido) propanones(Ⅱ) in good yields.Compounds Ⅱ were hydrolysed to amino-ketones (Ⅲ),which were then reduced to Ⅳ on the one hand,and acetylated to amines Ⅴ on the other hand.When the latter compounds were reduced by sodium borohydride,the corresponding γ-aryl-γ-hydroxy-propylamines (Ⅵ) were obtained.
