Gas-liquid chromatography of octylphenols

Identification of reaction products of phenol with 2-octanol by gas-liq. chromatog. using aryl carboxylate type liquid crystals as stationary phase is reported. Among the examined liquid crystals, phthalyl bis(p-heptoxybenzoate) at 140?exhibited the best separation efficiency. The reaction product was a mixture of o-and p-isomers of 1-methylheptylphenol, 1-ethylhexylphenol and 1-propylamylphenol as shown by gas chromatog.-mass spectrometric studies in comparison with synthetic stds. The effect of column temperature on the separation efficiency as well as on the adjusted retention time was also evaluated. The supercooling phenomenon was observed A quant. anal. of reaction products from various catalyst systems was also performed.
