Improvement of Electrical Conductivity of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes by Chlorine-doping

Cl2-MWNTs composites were fabricated by chlorine-absorpting under the conditions of low temperature, high temperature and UV irradiation. Under the condition of UV irradiation, the electrical conductiviy of the Cl2-MWNTs composite was best. Compared with the undoped MWNTs, the electrical conductivity was improved to over 5 times. TG, FTIR, UV-vis and XPS analyses were used to study the interactions between chlorine and MWNTs. It was showed that the π-electrons were transferred from MWNTs to chlorine and conjugated system was formed between MWNTs and chlorine. The electrical conductivities of the composites were improved due to the higher degree delocalization of the π-electrons.
