The formation of a violet or pink colored complex of Co⁺⁺ with p-nitro-phenylhydrazone of diacetylmonoxime in the presence of ammonium hydroxide was utilized in the colorimetric determination of microgram quantities of cobalt. Ammonium acetate, together with ethyl alcohol, was used to destroy the violet color developed by the interaction between ammonium hydroxide and the reagent.
