A new synthesis of the principal component of San Jise Scale's sex pheromone

Abstract

A new synthesis of the principal component of San Jose scale's sex pheromone, 3,7-dimethyl-2,7-octadien-1-yl propionate (1) is reported. The conjugate allylation of Me vinyl ketone with 2-methylallyltrimethylsilane gave 6-methyl-6-hepten-2-one. Subsequent Wittig-Horner reaction with (EtO)2P(O)CH2CO2Et, reduction with lithium aluminum hydride and acylation with propionic anhydride afforded a Z, E mixture of I in the ratio of Z:E = 23:77.
