八甲基环四硅氧烷和六甲基二硅氧烷的混合物以浓硫酸为催化剂进行平衡化反应,所得硅油的分子量不够高,且在高温或碱的存在下不太稳定。从縮合試驗和Karl Fischer試剂滴定的結果証明,这种硅油的末端一小部分含羟基。改用70%硫酸为催化剂时,可得分子量高而稳定的硅油。

Octamethyltetrasiloxane,D4 and hexamethyldisiloxane,MM can be equilibrated by suitable catalyst:
n/4D4+MM→MDnM
With the same ratio of D4 to MM,the products obtained by using concentrated sulfuric acid as catalyst have much lower average molecular weights and greater change of viscosity upon prolong heating and by action of alkali than those obtained by using 70% sulfuric acid.The reason for the difference in the properties of the products is presumably that,in the former,the polydimethylsiloxane molecules are terminated partially by SiOH,which gradually condenses to form SiOSi linkage with increase in molecular weight.The presence of SiOH group had been prow ed by Karl Fischer titration method.Using 70% sulfuric acid,much less SiOH group was found.
