In this paper we have studied the reactions of alkyl aluminium or monomer with tungsten hexachloride and the relationship between the oxidation state of tungsten and its catalytic activity. A method for the determination of the oxidation state of tungsten has been established.The experimental results agree better with the oarbene mechanism of polymerization over the qvzsi-cyolobutene mechanism.
