Five alkaloids were isolated from the whole plant of Gelsemiumc elegans Benth., a Chinese toxic plant.They were identified as gelsemine (1), koumidine (2), konmine (3),gelsedine (4) and aknammidine (5) by physioal, chemical and spectral analyses goumidine (2),G₁₉H₂₂N₂O(M⁺, 294), had m.p.202-204℃ and [a]_D²⁰-20.8°(0.1.85, CH₈OH).Its MS was completely similar to that of normaousine B, except that the formor had a sharp dehydrated fragmentary peak at m/z 276.It seemed that 2 was the C₁₆ epimer of normacusine B, namoly, in 2 the C₁₆-CH₂OH group was undo to the indole moiety.On oxidation with Jones reagent 2 was converted to dehydrokoumidine (10) G₁₉H₂₀N₂O(M⁺,292), m.p.higher than 300℃, According to ¹H NMR and MS analyses of its N-acetyl derivative (I1),G₁₉H₂₀N₂O(M⁺, 334),m.p.229-231℃, the ether linkage between C₆ and C₁₇ in 10 was confirmed.So it could be concluded that 2 was C₁₆ (S)-normacusine B.
