SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF SILVER WITH 2-(5’-CHLORO-2’-PYRIDYLAZO)-5-DIMETHYLAMINOANILINE IN THE PRESENCE OF ANIONIC SURFACTANT

A simple, sensitive and selective spectrophotometric method for the determina- Lion of ailver was established. This new method was based on the formation of red color from the reaction between silver(I) and 2-(5'-chloro-2'-pyridylazo)-5-dimethylaminoaniline(S-Cl-PADMA, 1) in the presence of an anionic-surfactant, sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS).The colored solution has an absorption magimnm at 500 um against water, and at 530 um against a reagent blank. The molar absorptivity ε is 6.7×104 1·mol-1·cm-1.The absorbance is constant over the range pH 6-10.5.Boer's law is obeyed for 0~1.2 ppm of silver. The oompleg was estimated to be 1:2 by both the continuous variation method and molar ratio method. In the presence of Ca-CyDTA, this method is selective for the determination of silver and has been tested for the determination of trace amounts of silver in uranium and aluminium containing samples.
