ZnO nanorods were successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted solid-state reaction, and the nanorods are about 60~385 nm in diameter and several microns in length. The precursor was obtained by one-step room temperature solid-state reaction between Zn(CH3COO)2•2H2O and Na2CO3 in the presence of PEG400. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the ZnO nanorods ex-hibits a strong near-band-edge emission at 355 nm. Compared with conventional heating, microwave radia-tion played an important role in formation of ZnO nanorods. In addition, formation mechanism of such ZnO nanorods was also discussed in brief.
