New poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) adsorption resins modified with 2-carboxylbenzoyl (ZH-01) or benzoyl (ZH-02 and ZH-03) group were prepared. The static adsorption and static desorption characteristics for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in aqueous solution onto above adsorption resins and Amberlite XAD-4 in the temperature range of 288~318 K were studied with bottle point method to confirm the existence of chemisorption between adsorbate and adsorbent, which was interpreted by the approximate orbital energy level of several adsorbents and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol calculated with the semiempirical molecular orbital method AM1. The result shows that the interaction between hydroxyl group in 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and 2-carboxylbenzoyl or benzoyl group on the modified adsorbents will exist in the adsorption system of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in aqueous solutions with ZH-01, ZH-02 or ZH-03 at the proper temperature. The breakthrough and total adsorption capacities of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in aqueous solutions with the modified adsorption resins increased to 150% and 114%~128% compared to that with Amberlite XAD-4.
