Study on the Synthesis and Superhydrophobic Properties of Fluorinated Copolymers with Carboxyl Group

The copolymers were synthetized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and free radical polymerization in cyclohexanone with monomers methyl methacrylate (MMA), methacrylic acid (MAA) and perfluoroalkyl ethyl methylacrylate (FMA). The surfaces were generated by one-step casting process with different solvents. The surface morphologies and hydrophobicity of as-prepared films were determined by copolymer structure and composition. The carboxyl group could change the solubility of fluorinated copolymers and their surface morphologies, which could help to get superhydrophobic surface by conventional solvent. The hydrophobic property was good when the MMA/MAA molar proportion was from 5∶1 to 1∶1. Different hydrophobic surfaces were generated by different solvents such as toluene, tetrahydrofuran and benzotrifluoride. And the contact angle of surfaces generated by toluene was 157°. The block copolymers could make better superhydrophobicity than the random copolymers due to the more ordered structure.
