Abstract

The reaction of Meldrum's acid with H2C:CHCO2R (R = Me, Et) followed by alkylation with alkyl halides gave esters I (R = Me, Et; R1 = Me, allyl, PhCH2), ethanolysis of which gave EtO2CCH2CH2CHR1CO2Et.
