Abstract

Five photochromic crown ether merocyanine dyes were prepared by the condensation of 2-methylbenzothiazolium halide incorporating a crown ether structural component on the Ph moiety, with substituted salicylaldehydes in the presence of piperidine. These crown ether merocyanine dyes and the corresponding spiropyran isomer were in reverse photochromic equilibrium where the merocyanine form is more stable than the spiropyran form.
