Optically pure synthesis and a novel tandem asymmetric michael addition-elimination reaction of chiral 5-(1-menthyloxy)-3,4-dibromo-2- (5H)-furanone

The title compound I (M* = 1-menthyl) was prepared by bromination of furfural, followed by tautomerization, etherification with (-)-menthol, and crystallization- epimerization. A new asym. tandem Michael addition- reaction of I with thiols and amines was investigated. E.g., reaction of I and RSH (R = Ph, PhCH2, furfuryl, n-C5H11) in CH2Cl2/Et3N gave thiofuranones II.
