A novel compound, 2-methoxy-3,4,7-trihydroxy-phenanthrene (1), along with 4-methoxy- 2,5-dihydroxy-phenathrene (2), eugenitin (3) and 2,5-dihydroxy-4-methoxy-9,10-dihydroxyphenanthrene (4), was isolated from Bulbuphyllum inconsipicum. 1 and 2 suppressing HL-60 and SMMC-7721 cells were investigated in vitro with cytotoxic activity. Furthermore, synergistic inhibition of 1 and 2 with pu-erarin was assessed.

Key words: 2-methoxy-3,4,7-trihydroxy-phenanthrene, cytotoxic activity, puerarin, Bulbuphyllum inconsipicum
