Synthesis of Photochromic 1,2-Dithienylethene Derivative with a 2,2,5,5-Tetrafluoro-2,5-dihydrofuran Bridge Unit

A novel photochromic 1,2-dithienylethene derivative (1) with a 2,2,5,5-tetrafluoro-2,5-dihydro- furan bridge unit was designed and synthesized. The key intermediate perfluoro-2,5-dihydrofuran (2) was prepared from cheap and readily available material hexachlorobuta-1,3-diene. The reaction of 2 with 3 -bromo-[2,2 :5 ,2 ]trithiophene (3) in the presence of n-BuLi gave the fluorinated photochromic molecule 1.
