Conversion of hypocrellin A in alkaline and neutral media

Abstract

Stirring hypocrellin A (I) in 1.5% aqueous KOH for 24 h afforded hypocrellin B in high yield. Similar reaction of I at reflux for 8 h gave mostly compound II. The structure of II was determine by MS, 1H NMR, IR and UV-vis spectra.
