Stirring EtOCR:NCH2R1 (R = Me, Ph; R1 = cyano, CO2Et) with H2C:CR2R3 (R2 = H, Me; R3 = cyano, CO2Me), Bu4NBr, K2CO3, or KOH in MeCN gave 31-73% EtOCR:NCHR1CH2CHR2R3 (I). Hydrolysis of I (R = Ph, R1 = CO2Et, R2 = H, R3 = cyano) gave glutamic acid.
